This week I decided to do my blog on the NFL draft. The draft is less than 24 days away and teams are looking to add players from the college ranks. The draft has been going on for over 75 years and has progressively evolved from just picking the best college players to a study and a science of evaluation.
For Professional teams the draft process is year round. Depending on a teams win, lose record depends how high the team picks. There are 32 teams in the NFL and the draft is 7 rounds and 32 picks a round. Teams can trade pick to other teams at the price of players or draft picks, or both.
For teams the evaluation process is all year round and a lot of time and money is put into it. All through the college football season NFL teams send out scouts to watch college players live or on film and evaluate their skill in hopes of finding a player that will help their team win. These players get paid millions before they even set foot on a NFL field, so teams better do their homework to get a player and not a flop that could set their team back years and also cost the team money. Teams look for several things when looking at a player, which are football talent and knowledge, athleticism, and physical prowess. The player show these skills through their play on the field and at their personal pro days and at the NFL combine.
For the players to declare for the draft they most have been in college for at least three years before declaring for the Draft. Once a player declares, most find representation or a agent to help promote their athlete and sell them to NFL teams. A agent basically takes care of the business side of it, so the player can just play and train. Players also go into training once they complete they college playing to train for their pro days and if they get invited to the NFL combine that also. Depending on what the teams want to see the player will perform in a number of position drills and drills that test physical ability.
In closing the NFL is a 5 billion dollar a year business that would not exist without putting out a good product which is their football that which is performed by its players.
