This week I decided to do my blog on the NFL draft. The draft is less than 24 days away and teams are looking to add players from the college ranks. The draft has been going on for over 75 years and has progressively evolved from just picking the best college players to a study and a science of evaluation.
For Professional teams the draft process is year round. Depending on a teams win, lose record depends how high the team picks. There are 32 teams in the NFL and the draft is 7 rounds and 32 picks a round. Teams can trade pick to other teams at the price of players or draft picks, or both.
For teams the evaluation process is all year round and a lot of time and money is put into it. All through the college football season NFL teams send out scouts to watch college players live or on film and evaluate their skill in hopes of finding a player that will help their team win. These players get paid millions before they even set foot on a NFL field, so teams better do their homework to get a player and not a flop that could set their team back years and also cost the team money. Teams look for several things when looking at a player, which are football talent and knowledge, athleticism, and physical prowess. The player show these skills through their play on the field and at their personal pro days and at the NFL combine.
For the players to declare for the draft they most have been in college for at least three years before declaring for the Draft. Once a player declares, most find representation or a agent to help promote their athlete and sell them to NFL teams. A agent basically takes care of the business side of it, so the player can just play and train. Players also go into training once they complete they college playing to train for their pro days and if they get invited to the NFL combine that also. Depending on what the teams want to see the player will perform in a number of position drills and drills that test physical ability.
In closing the NFL is a 5 billion dollar a year business that would not exist without putting out a good product which is their football that which is performed by its players.
I think the NFL is one of the higher paid sports out there and to be able to watch these guys do what they do best is great entertainment. With all the trainers, water boys, towel boys, coaches, and players in general it's no surprise they get five billion a year. I hope my team the Vikings get some good athletes this coming draft.
ReplyDeleteThe NFL draft is a big part. As a college football player, I usually keep up with the recruiting and the draft. The one thing I like about College Football is that the players have to be there for at least 3 years. In College Basketball, they only have to be there for one year. Having some type of College Education is important if these players do get injuries while they are still young. The Vikings are always closely watched and will hope that there draft picks will turn out and contribute.
ReplyDeleteIt is cool to see the NFL evolve from where it was ten years ago, to where it is now. This business is a wealthy one, which keeps on growing year after year. I believe most of us has heard about the strike that is brewing up in NFL, and I don't see why these millionarie have to cry so much. Even if these guys go on strike, it makes it better for the small school guys to be drafted in the future. I know hundrends of thousands of people will be watching to see who gets drafted. I know I will be
ReplyDeleteI am very interested in the NFL draft. It is definitely a big deal for NFL teams to pay special attention to it. The media makes a ton of money trying to predict which college players will go to what team. They have been talking about the draft for many days now on ESPN. I have seen many projections of where different players are going. The media will make a bunch of money on draft day, when everyone is watching to see where their favorite players will go.
ReplyDeleteThe NFL Draft is such a huge media event that they are going 3 days. The first round is now being shown in prime time which is a first. Usually it begins at like 3 pm on a Saturday and goes through 3 rounds and 4 rounds on Sunday. The only thing that is wrong with the draft is the number of invitees this year. Before this year, they had an average of 8 rookies come to the draft. This year they are up to 18 I believe, and one of those invites went out to Tim Tebow. Tebow is know where near a first round draft choice and shouldn't be invited at all.
